Maplewood resident charged with rape of 15-year-old

Lavell Hollenbeck

Lavell Hollenbeck, 21, of Maplewood pleaded guilty Oct. 14 to a sexual assault involving a teenage girl.

Hollenbeck was charged with three first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges and two third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges.

All five charges were in relation to a single incident that occurred Oct. 15, 2015, on the 1700 block of Hoyt Avenue in St. Paul when a 15-year-old girl was raped while intoxicated and unconscious.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl had been spending time with her male friends drinking and watching TV when she met Hollenbeck for the first time. She reportedly had too much to drink and blacked out.

She awoke the following morning without her pants or underwear on. She also had bruises all over her neck and arms.

The criminal complaint stated that on Oct. 20, 2015, she returned to school and learned that someone had posted a video from that night on Facebook. The criminal complaint also said that police recovered the video from a juvenile’s Facebook messenger account. It showed Hollenbeck raping the girl while other juveniles held her down and tried to cover her mouth as she repeated ‘stop.’

In a police interview, Hollenbeck reportedly acknowledged that when the girl said stop and he didn’t stop, it was rape. He also admitted that he was displaying the Vill Gang signs during the video, but that he was not a member of the street gang and was just giving them a “shout out.”

Hollenbeck’s sentencing date is set for Jan. 13.
