Polars volleyball set for playoff run

The North High School volleyball team wrapped up one championship earlier this month and begins the chase for another this week. The Polars open the section playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 27, with a home match.

North won the Metro East Conference championship by going unbeaten in league play. The Polars closed out the regular season on Oct. 18 with a straight-sets win over Mahtomedi.

The Mahtomedi victory kept intact North’s winning streak, which sits at 13 matches and dates back to last month. After losing to Shakopee in the first round of a tournament on Sept. 23, North finished the event with three straight victories. The Polars then won three non-conference matches before taking the Alexandria tournament with a 4-0 record.

Overall, North is 23-3 and has lost only to Shakopee, Wayzata and Roseville.

The Polars will have a shot at getting back at Roseville if the two teams can reach the finals of the Section 4AAA tournament. Roseville is the No. 1 seed while North is the second seed. The two programs met in the section final three straight years from 2012 to 2014.

North’s first playoff opponent will be either seventh-seeded Mahtomedi or 10th-seeded Irondale, who faced each other in the first round on Tuesday.

The section tournament continues next week with the semifinals on Oct. 31 and the championship match on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Washington High School.

Tartan

The Titans (9-16) drew the ninth seed in Section 4AAA and visited eighth-seeded Mounds View on Tuesday, after the deadline for this edition of the Review. The winner moves on to the semifinals, where it faces top-seeded Roseville on Thursday.

Tartan (9-15) closed out the regular season last week with a 3-1 loss to Hill-Murray.

Hill-Murray

The Pioneers open the post-season on Oct. 26 in the first round of the Section 4AA tournament. The seeds and exact schedule for the tournament were not available for this edition of the Review.

Hill-Murray (15-13) is likely to be the No. 2 seed behind only Holy Angels (23-4). As the second seed, the Pioneers would host matches in the first three rounds if they continue to advance. The section final takes place at Bloomington Kennedy High School.

The Pioneers finished second to North in the Metro East Conference standings.

Hill-Murray’s overall record doesn’t look all that impressive, especially considering the Pioneers are likely to be a high seed in their section. Hill-Murray’s schedule is impressive, however, as more than half of its losses are to Class AAA teams.
