Mustangs, Knights capture volleyball tournament titles

The volleyball teams from Irondale and Mounds View spent most of the first day of October in a gym competing in tournaments. While they missed out on some spectacular Minnesota fall weather, it was worth it in the end.

Both teams took home first place from the respective tournaments. Mounds View won the eight-team Centennial tournament with a 4-0 record while Irondale captured the top spot in the 12-team Mora tournament also with a record of 4-0.

At Centennial, Mounds View went 3-0 in pool play with 2-0 victories over Chisago Lakes and the host Cougars and a 2-1 win over Burnsville. By winning the pool, the Mustangs advanced to the championship match, where they beat St. Francis 2-0 to win the title.

Irondale played two pool matches at the Mora tournament, beating Milaca 2-0 and Greenway 2-1. In the semifinals, the Knights downed Becker 2-1 and then topped Rockford 2-0 in the finals.

The victories in the Mora tournament snapped a three-game losing streak for Irondale and improved the Knights’ record to 9-8. It is the first time they have been above .500 this season.

Irondale travels to St. Francis on Oct. 4 and hosts Robbinsdale Armstrong on Oct. 6.

Mounds View also moved above .500 with the four tournament victories. The Mustangs were 4-7 following a three-match losing streak, which they snapped on Sept. 29 with a sweep of White Bear Lake.

Mounds View is back in action three times this week, including a home match against Forest Lake on Oct. 6. On Oct. 8, the Mustangs venture north and west to Alexandria for a tournament.
