Prep soccer heading down the home stretch

The high school soccer season has reached its final week before the playoffs start. The teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy have just a handful of games remaining to tune up for the section tournaments.

The Raiders have had a nice turnaround this season. With four games left in the regular season, they had already surpassed last year’s win total.

Roseville won five games in 2015 and had reached seven wins this season. The Raiders also did not win a Suburban East Conference match last year but have two SEC wins with two games to play.

The Raiders got off to a fast start by winning their first four and six of their first seven matches. Roseville’s momentum was slowed a bit over the past two weeks with only one win in its last five contests but it did play to a tie against second-place Cretin-Derham Hall on Sept. 29.

Roseville closes out the regular season this week with a trip to White Bear Lake on Oct. 4 and a visit from second-ranked and SEC-leading Stillwater on Oct. 6. The Raiders travel to Irondale for a non-conference tilt on Oct. 8.

The Section 4AA playoffs begin Oct. 11.

RAHS boys

Roseville has found it difficult to put the ball in the net in recent weeks. The Raiders have scored just one goal in their past seven matches.

Following a strong start to the season, wins have been hard to come by since the middle of September. Roseville started the season 4-1-1 but is 0-4-3 in its last seven games.

Roseville closes out the regular season with a match at White Bear Lake on Oct. 4 and a home contest against unbeaten and top-ranked Stillwater on Oct. 6.

The Section 5AA playoffs begin Oct. 13.

Concordia Academy

Both Concordia Academy teams are flirting with the .500 mark, which shows marked improvements over last year.

The girls team picked up a 7-0 victory over Columbia Heights on Sept. 29 to improve its record to 5-6 overall. The Beacons won just four matches in all of 2015.

Concordia’s girls close out the regular season with a match at St. Croix Lutheran on Oct. 4 and a home contest against Mounds Park Academy on Oct. 6.

On the boys side, Concordia Academy was 5-5-1 with five matches to play. The Beacons collected only three victories in 2015.

Three matches are on the docket for the Beacons boys this week. They hosted DeLaSalle on Oct. 3, St. Croix Lutheran on Oct. 4 and Hmong Academy on Oct. 6.

The Section 4A playoffs begin on Oct. 10.
