Area athletes earn collegiate honors

A pair of former Bulletin-area high school athletes earned accolades for their recent performances for their respective college teams.

St. Anthony Village High School graduate Justice Spriggs and Mounds View High School alumnus Tyler Smith picked up athlete-of-the-week honors last week.

Spriggs, a 2015 St. Anthony graduate, is a sophomore quarterback at Hamline University in St. Paul and he helped lead the Pipers to a season-opening victory over Crown College on Sept. 3. He completed 25 of 33 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns and also scored a rushing touchdown in Hamlineís 29-9 victory. That effort earned him the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week award.

Spriggs wasn’t Hamline’s starting QB last year in his freshman season until the starter got hurt. Spriggs stepped in at mid-season and finished the year with 1,011 passing yards, seven touchdowns and threw just one interception.

In addition to Spriggs’ passing yards against Crown, the Hamline ground game also contributed nearly 200 yards as the Pipers finished with 523 yards of total offense.

Smith, who graduated from Mounds View earlier this year, is a freshman on the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s golf team. He earned UW-Superior athlete-of-the-week honors for the Yellowjackets.

Smith made his collegiate debut in a two-day tournament played at two courses in Duluth and Superior and tied for third overall. He finished tied with a teammate for team-high honors.
