Week two football matchups

With week one in the books, the Bulletin Area high school football teams have an idea of what works and what needs to be worked on more. They’ll use that information to prepare for week two, which has Mounds View and St. Anthony Village at home and Irondale on the road.

Irondale heads to the island on Friday to take on DeLaSalle. The Islanders won last year’s match-up 15-12 at Irondale.

Neither Irondale nor DeLaSalle could string victories together last year and entered 2016 looking for a turnaround. The Knights won just once in the regular season in 2015 while DeLaSalle captured only two wins. Both squads went 1-1 in the post-season.

Irondale opened its season on Sept. 1 by losing 35-8 to Waconia at Wendt Stadium. The Knights beat the Wildcats 21-19 in last year’s season opener.

Mounds View returns home to a couple of improvements at Mustang Stadium. A new pressbox and scoreboard were installed over the summer and are expected to be ready for the football home opener.

Paying a visit on Friday is East Ridge, a team with high expectations after advancing to the state final in 2015. The Raptors went 7-1 in the regular season a year ago and then won four games to reach the Prep Bowl at TCF Bank Stadium. East Ridge came up just short in its bid for a state title, which went to Osseo thanks to its 14-13 victory.

Mounds View owes the Raptors some payback after losing to them 28-21 last season. It was East Ridge’s first football victory over Mounds View, which won the first five meetings between the two programs.

East Ridge opened the season on Sept. 1 by losing 24-23 in overtime to Lakeville North.

St. Anthony will also be looking to avenge a 2015 loss in week two when the Huskies host St. Paul Central on Friday. The Minutemen thumped St. Anthony 44-14 in week two last year.

Mounds View and St. Anthony both played their opening games on Sept. 2 and because of an early holiday deadline, results of those games were unavailable for this edition of the Bulletin.
