Irondale boys soccer looking for more victories

After winning only two games a year ago, the Irondale High School boys soccer team is trying to get into the win column more often this season. The Knights return eight starters from a season ago.

Among the players returning is leading scorer Carlos Momsen and team captains Connor Mann, TJ Frantz and Ibrahim Maameri.

The goalkeeping duties this season have fallen to varsity newcomer Kennedy Kikeh.

Irondale is off to a 0-4 start but battled a pair of Northwest Suburban Conference foes in two games last week. The Knights dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions to fifth-ranked Park Center and Centennial.

The Knights held a 1-0 lead at halftime against Centennial but the Cougars rallied with a pair of second-half goals. Maameri scored Irondale’s lone goal against Park Center.

Irondale opened the season on August 27 with a 1-0 loss to Cristo Rey Jesuit and followed that up with a 6-3 loss to Mounds View on August 29. Momsen scored twice against the Mustangs and Mann had the other Irondale goal.

Up next for Irondale is another three-match week, starting Sept. 6 with a trip to Champlin Park. The Knights then return home for games against Coon Rapids on Sept. 8 and St. Francis on Sept. 10.
