Former Pioneers selected in NHL draft

The North St. Paul Cavalry American Legion baseball team went 1-2 in the Sub-State 8 tournament.

Cavalry, seeded fifth, dropped a heart-breaker to fourth-seeded Lino Lakes in the first round. North St. Paul led 7-3 going to the bottom of the ninth but watched as Lino Lakes scored five runs, all with two outs, to pull out the 8-7 victory.

North St. Paul bounced back in the next round and beat ninth-seeded Chisago Lakes 15-4 to avoid elimination.

Cavalry was only able to avoid elimination once, however. Forest Lake, the third seed, ended North St. Paul’s tournament and season with a 5-0 win in the next round.

Forest Lake went on to win the sub-state championship by upsetting second-seeded Tri-City Red and top-seeded Stillwater twice.
