Cavalry tries to make a run

The North St. Paul Cavalry American Legion baseball team had a shot at an upset in the first round of the Sub-State 8 playoffs last week, but couldn’t hang on in the ninth inning. Cavalry followed up the loss by avoiding elimination in the first round of losers-bracket play.

Cavalry entered the playoffs as the No. 5 seed and faced fourth-seeded Lino Lakes on July 19 at White Bear Lake High School. North St. Paul led 7-3 going to the bottom of the ninth before the bottom fell out.

Lino Lakes scored five runs, all with two outs, to grab the unlikely victory.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, North St. Paul bounced back the next day and thumped Chisago Lakes 15-4 in an elimination game.

Following the games on July 20, the tournament was postponed one day due to the high heat indices that gripped the state. Because of that, the rest of the Sub-State 8 tournament was played past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

There were still six teams alive after the July 20 games. Top-seeded Stillwater and No. 2 seed Tri-City Red had yet to lose in the tournament. The four teams with only one loss were Cavalry, Forest Lake, White Bear and Lino Lakes.

Stillwater whipped Chisago Lakes 16-0 in the first round and beat Lino Lakes 7-2 in the second. Tri-City Red had no trouble with White Bear in the first round, winning 15-2, and rallied from four down to knock off Forest Lake 10-8 in the second round.

White Bear bounced back from its loss to Tri-City and eliminated Tri-City Maroon 13-6 in round two. Tri-City Maroon had lost to Forest Lake 10-4 in the first round.

The Sub-State 8 champion joins 15 other teams in the state tournament, which runs July 29 through August 1 in Delano.
