Rosetown legion baseball update

The road to the Minnesota American Legion state baseball tournament begins on July 19. Rosetown must overcome seven other teams in a double-elimination tournament to clinch one of the 16 state berths.

Rosetown tried to build some momentum heading into the postseason by sweeping a doubleheader in Fourth District play last week. The wins gave the Rockets three straight district victories.

Rosetown hosted Tri-City Maroon for a pair of games on July 13 and came away with wins of 6-0 and 7-3. Paired with a win in the final round of the Gopher Classic the previous weekend and the Rockets had a three-game winning streak.

The Rockets closed out the regular season on July 16 with a game at White Bear. Results were not available for this edition of the Review.

Rosetown’s win in the Gopher Classic came in what turned out to be its last game of the tournament. The Rockets whipped Grand Rapids 19-6 on July 10.

The Rockets were scheduled to face Edina in the final game of the day on July 10 but that game was cancelled because it would have had no bearing on which team won the pool and advanced to the playoffs.

Omaha Burke, Nebraska, won the pool with a 4-1 record. Mankato National also went 4-1 but lost to Omaha and thus also lost the tie-breaker. Edina finished 3-1, Rosetown went 1-3 and Grand Rapids and Manitoba posted records of 1-4.

Rosetown opened the Gopher Classic on July 8 with a 4-2 loss to Omaha. The next day the Rockets fell 8-0 to Manitoba and 14-9 to Mankato.

Omaha saw its tournament run come to an end in the first round of the playoffs as it fell 8-0 in five innings to Coon Rapids.

Wayzata, whose roster includes a number of players from Wayzata High School’s state-championship team, won the Gopher Classic title. Wayzata beat Rapid City, South Dakota, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Omaha Creighton Prep, Nebraska, and Omaha Skutt, Nebraska, in the playoffs to claim the championship.

The seeds and schedule for the Sub-State 7 tournament were determined over the weekend, past the deadline for this edition of the Review. Check out for updates throughout the tournament.

Rosetown’s last trip to the state tournament came in 1995. Since then, the closest the Rockets came was in 2004 and 2010, when they finished runner-up in the district tournament.

The 2004 district tournament was the toughest to take. Rosetown won the regular-season district title and its first two playoff games to reach the finals. The Rockets had two chances to beat Tri-City Red in the final and clinch a state berth but dropped both games.

In 2010, Rosetown made the finals of the district tournament but needed to beat regular-season champion North St. Paul twice. The 39ers weren’t having any of it, however, and clinched the title in game one.
