Pioneers announce new coaches

Two new coaches were hired at Hill-Murray High School recently.

Pete Bercich is the new football coach and Jeff Zupfer takes over as head coach of the boys soccer team.

Bercich is a former National Football League player and currently is the color commentator for the radio broadcasts of Minnesota Vikings football. Bercich replaces Rick Fryklund, who coached the Pioneers for one season and guided them to a 0-8 regular-season record and a 1-1 mark in the section playoffs.

Bercich, an Illinois native, played football at the University of Notre Dame before joining the Vikings for a seven-year playing career and five-year coaching stint. He has worked Vikings’ radio broadcasts for nine seasons.

Bercich will also serve as director of development at Hill-Murray.

Zupfer brings a wealth of club soccer coaching experience to the Pioneers. He has coached for the St. Croix and Woodbury soccer clubs for 22 years and over that time his teams have won 10 state championships and one region title.

Zupfer also coached for nine seasons at Macalester College in St. Paul and led the Scots to six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.

“I look forward to building a soccer community at Hill-Murray that builds on the tradition and reputation of the program,” Zupfer said in a release. “Our players will be successful on the field, in the classroom and in the community. We are excited to open the new stadium at Hill-Murray this fall and to be a part of the energy and enthusiasm around this great addition to our school.”

Zupfer lives in Woodbury with his wife Kersten and their three children.

Hill-Murray went 8-6-2 in the regular season and 1-1 in the section playoffs in 2015.
