Area golfers compete at state

A few years ago, the Minnesota State High School League moved its state golf tournaments a week later in June. This year’s tournaments were held June 14-15 and three Review-area students participated.

Hill-Murray High School sent Ben Warian and Olivia Johnson to the Class AA tournament and North High’s Logan Xiong competed in the Class AAA tournament.

Olivia Johnson

Johnson, who graduated from Hill-Murray earlier this spring, played in the Class AA girls tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. She capped off her prep golf career by finishing tied for 10th.

Johnson shot a two-day score of 163, which matched the score fired by Lake City junior Lexi Geolat. Johnson and Geolat both shot 40 on the front nine and 44 on the back on day one of the tournament. On day two, Johnson started off with a 41 and followed that up with a 38 on the back nine. Geolat went 42-37 on day two.

The Class AA state individual championship was shared by Detroit Lakes senior Kate Smith and Visitation junior Anni Heck. They both carded 139s and beat the third-place finisher, Osakis sophomore Alayna Eldred, by seven shots.

In addition to the individual title, Smith also helped Detroit Lakes capture the team championship. The Lakers’ top four golfers combined for a team score of 633 and beat runner-up Lake City by nine shots.

For Johnson, this was her second trip to the state golf tournament. As a junior in 2015, she shot 181 and tied for 60th place in the Class AAA tournament.

Ben Warian

Just an eighth grader, Warian played in the Class AA boys tournament at Sand Creek and finished 11th. He shot a two-round score of 151 with a 76 (39-37) on day one and a day-two score of 75 (38-37).

Blake junior Derek Hitchner won the individual title with a two-day score of 134. He beat runner-up Alex Wilson, a senior at Holy Family Catholic, by 11 strokes.

Hitchner also guided the Bears to the team championship. Blake recorded a team score of 589 and beat runner-up Holy Family by 15 shots.

Logan Xiong

Xiong, a sophomore, competed in the Class AAA boys tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids. His two-day score of 163 landed him in a five-way tie for 65th place. Tying with Xiong were Winona senior Bryce Galewski, Moorhead junior Jake Beedy, Lakeville South junior William Moore and Minnetonka eighth grader Gunnar Broin.

Xiong started out the tournament with day-one score of 80 (39-41) and followed that up with an 83 (40-43) on day two.

Minnetonka swept both titles in the boys’ event. Junior Ben Sigel won the individual crown with a 139 and beat runner-up Harrison Cooper, a senior at Simley, by six shots.

The Skippers won the team championship by 13 strokes over runner-up Lakeville South. Minnetonka’s top four golfers teamed up to fire a 594 while the Cougars came in with a 607.
