North earns seven entries in state track meet

The North High School track and field teams are set to have representation at the state meet later this week. The Polars amassed seven entries via performances at the Section 4AA meet last week at East Ridge High School.

Freshman J’ianna Cager will be the busiest Polar as she is set to participate in three different events at state. Cager qualified for the 100-meter dash by finishing second at the section meet with a time of 12.45 seconds. Only Woodbury’s Taylor Raines was faster at 12.13 seconds.

Cager joins sophomore Jebeh Cooke, senior Hannah Pedersen and freshman Haylee Pedersen at state in a pair of relays. The foursome won the section title in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 49.88 seconds. They also qualified for state in 4x200-meter relay by finishing second to White Bear Lake with a time of 1:44.83.

Also state-bound from the North girls team is senior Kally Kolbeck, who will compete in the pole vault. She made state by finishing second at the section meet with a top height of 10 feet, eight inches. White Bear Lake senior Jenna Ellertson won the event with a top height of 10 feet, eight inches.

Going to state from the boys team are junior Jake Kubiatowicz and senior Andrew Thibaudeau.

Kubiatowicz is a two-event qualifier. He made it to state in the discus with a dominating performance. His top distance of 173 feet, eight inches beat out the runner-up, Kaleb Siekmeier of Mahtomedi, by 30 feet, one inch.

A second-place finish in the shot put was enough to get Kubiatowicz a second state entry. His top toss of 54 feet, seven inches left him an inch and a half behind section champion Nathan Bursch of Woodbury.

Thibaudeau also punched his ticket to state via a second-place finish. He cleared 12 feet, nine inches to finish runner-up to Mahtomedi’s Matt Kummeth, who won the event at 13 feet, nine inches.

The Class AA state meet, which takes place June 10-11 at Hamline University’s Klas Field, begins at 9 a.m. each day. Day one is mostly prelims with a handful of finals in some field events and the 3,200 meters. Finals in all of the other events are set for day two.
