Knights, Mustangs face uphill climb in section softball

The fastpitch softball teams from Irondale and Mounds View suffered through rough regular seasons as they combined for only five victories. It takes at minimum four wins to claim the Section 5AAAA championship, which means the Knights and Mustangs would need quite a turnaround to make a post-season run.

Mounds View (3-16) landed the sixth seed in the section tournament and opened the double-elimination event against third-seeded Osseo (11-8). Irondale (2-16) was the eighth seed and faced No. 1 seed Centennial (13-7) in the first round.

Results of those first-round games were not available at press time for this edition of the Bulletin.

The tournament continues with second-round games on May 24. There are also games scheduled for May 26, May 31 and June 2. The entire tournament takes place at Rice Creek Park in Shoreview.

Mounds View’s regular-season victories this season came against Spring Lake Park, which is the fourth seed in Section 5AAAA, East Ridge and New Ulm. The Mustangs opened the season with a nine-game losing streak before knocking off Spring Lake Park at a tournament in Rochester on April 30.

Irondale picked up regular-season wins over St. Paul Como Park, which is seeded second in its section tournament, and Coon Rapids.
