Prep tennis playoffs begin

The main goal for the Mounds View High School boys tennis team this season is to repeat what it accomplished at the end of the season in 2015. The first step toward that goal takes place this week.

Mounds View is the defending Class AA state team champion and to do that again, it must win the Section 4AA title. The section team tournament takes place on May 17, 19, 23 and 25.

Pairings for the tournament were not available for this edition of the Bulletin but it is a good bet that Mounds View lands the No. 1 seed. The Mustangs have lost only three matches this spring and two of those were to the top-ranked team in the state — East Ridge.

The first three rounds of the 4AA tournament are held at the higher-seeded team in each match. The title match, on May 25, is at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.

The Knights entered this week with a record of 8-5 and one regular-season match remaining. Irondale hosted Coon Rapids on May 16, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

The Section 5AA tournament pairings were not announced in time for this edition of the Bulletin. The tournament runs May 18-20 and 24. The first three rounds of the 4AA tournament are held at the higher seed in each match while the title match, on May 25, will take place at a yet-to-be-determined neutral site.

Irondale started off the season strong by winning five of its first six matches. The only loss in that stretch came against Mounds View. The Knights then went 3-5 in their next eight matches.

St. Anthony Village

The Huskies find themselves in a new section this season. After playing in Section 4A for a number of years, St. Anthony jumps to 5A for at least this season and next season.

The eight-team section also includes fellow Tri-Metro Conference-mates Brooklyn Center, Columbia Heights, DeLaSalle and Fridley along with Minneapolis schools, Edison, North and Henry.

The section team tournament was scheduled to begin May 15 — after the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin — and St. Anthony was set to play at Minneapolis Edison. The tournament continues with the semifinals on May 18 and the section final on May 20 at Spring Lake Park High School.
