Knights run fifth at section true team

The Irondale High School track and field teams competed in the Section 6AAA true-team meet on May 10 and both squads landed smack dab in the middle of standings. Both the boys and girls squads finished fifth out of nine teams.

The boys team fell 3.5 points shy of fourth place.

Individually, Irondale’s girls team got plenty of points from the duo of sophomore Julia Hayes and junior Michelle Meyer. They joined forces along with senior Emily Brandt and junior Elizabeth Axberg to win the 4x400-meter relay.

Hayes added wins in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle races and a ninth-place effort in the triple jump.

Meyer finished second in the 800 meters, took fourth in the long jump and sixth in the pole vault.

Top finishes for the boys team included junior Brandon Boleman’s victory in the 400 meters and junior Lee Waddell’s runner-up finish in the pole vault.

Irondale hosts the Greenslit Relays on May 17 before turning its attention to the Northwest Suburban Conference championships. The relays happened after the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

Irondale is the host for the conference prelims for boys on May 23 while the girls conference prelims are May 24 at Maple Grove. The finals for both genders are May 26 at Irondale.

The Knights then head to the Section 5AA meet on June 1 and 3 at Hamline University, which is also the site of the state meet on June 10-11.
