2016 Athena Award winners announced

Several local high school girls are among the recipients of 2016 St. Paul Area Athena Award. 

The Athena Awards Committee asked each school to nominate its top female athlete. Forty-three girls, representing St. Paul city and suburban public and private high school, were selected to receive the award.

The high school seniors will be recognized at an awards ceremony and luncheon on Wednesday, April 20, at 11:30 a.m. at the Prom Center, 484 Inwood Ave N., Oakdale. 



Abby Kain

Simley High School


Simley High School senior Abby Kain of Inver Grove Heights excels in basketball, volleyball and softball. She is also active in the Simley Spanish Club, Relay for Life project and National Honor Society chapter.

Abby has six letters in basketball and was named All-Conference five times. She was voted team captain for the 2015-2016 season.

In volleyball, Abby received five letters and was named MVP in 2015. She was twice named captain.

On the softball team, she received the Golden Glove Award in 2012 and was named captain for the 2016 season.

Outside of sports, she has been involved in the Young People Society at her church, South St. Paul’s On the Road Again festival, Metro East Conference Academy and Minnesota State High School League Region 3AA Target Leadership Workshop.

Next fall Abby plans to attend the University of Northern Colorado to play basketball and study sports and exercise science.

She is the daughter of Darren and Jodi Kain.




Abigail Dolan

Visitation School


Abigail Dolan of Sunfish Lake is another three-sport athlete. She plays golf and is on the track and field, and swim/dive teams at Convent of the Visitation School.

On the swim team, Abigail earned one All-State record and was named All-American six times. She was named captain of the team in 2014 and 2015.

She earned two letters and two All-Conference awards as part of track and field. She was named captain for the 2016 season.

Outside of athletics, she is a lay Eucharistic minister at Visitation and volunteers at Crocus Hill Preschool.

Abigail plans on swimming for University of Notre Dame in the fall.

This Athena Award winner is daughter of Laura and Chris Dolan.




Elise Barnes

South St. Paul Secondary


Packer Elise Barnes of South St. Paul is a five-sport athlete, playing softball, basketball, tennis, volleyball and the weightlifting team.

Elise earned six letters in softball and is a two-year captain of the team.

She is a two-year captain of the basketball team, where she earned four letters and one All-Conference award.

Elise was part of the Academic All-State in tennis, a sport she earned two letters in and was named rookie of the year.

She earned two letters in volleyball and five in weightlifting. Elise also has three powerclean records in weightlifting.

Besides being active in her school and a National Honor Society student, she is also involved in her community. Elise volunteers with Key Club, Holy Trinity Church and Feed My Starving Children.

Next year, Elise plans to attend the University of St. Thomas for exercise science and to play softball. 

Elise is the daughter of Leonard and Catherine Barnes.




Hannah Delmont

Henry Sibley High School


Henry Sibley senior Hannah Delmont has earned letters in volleyball, basketball and softball.

Besides sports, Hannah is active in her school community by being part of Link Crew, student council and choir.

She is a two-time captain of the volleyball team and also earned five letters.

Hannah received one letter in basketball and three in softball. She was also captain of the softball team for one year.

Outside of school and sports, Hannah volunteers with Special Olympics, Salvation Army and Feed my Starving Children. She also cleans and decorates her church, and provides childcare for the parent academy.

She is undecided about her plans for the fall.

This Athena Award winner is the daughter of Jennifer and Jason Delmont.
