Expectations remain high for Mounds View girls track

This is the 13th season that Aaron Redman and Scott Ylkanen have been co-head coaches of the Mounds View High School girls track and field team. In that time, the Mustangs have become a perennial powerhouse in the regular and true-team formats.

Mounds View is the defending Class AAA state true-team champion and hasn’t finished lower than fourth at true-team state since 2006. Among the goals for the team this season is to extend that streak another year.

Leading the 2016 version of Mounds View girls track is the senior captain quartet of Mara Balzer, Annalee Blake, Kacey Davitt and Natalie Louderback.

In addition to the state true-team title, Mounds View also captured the Suburban East Conference team championship for the fifth time in six years. A top-three finish at the SEC meet this season is another goal for the Mustangs.

Mounds View returns a number of athletes with state meet experience, including Emma Bangert. The sophomore middle-distance runner took third in the 800 meters at the 2015 state meet and also ran on Mound View’s 4x800-meter relay team that qualified for state.

Freshman Julia Fixsen finished ninth at state last year in the pole vault and also competes in some hurdle and jump events.

Blake was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that made state last year and she also won a state title in 2014 as a sophomore on the Mustangs’ 4x200-meter relay team.

Louderback qualified for state in the pole vault last season.

Junior Noelle Reynolds is back after helping the 4x100-meter relay team take third at state in 2015.

Senior Rachel Boyer, known for her prowess on the soccer field, ran at state last season on the 4x200-meter relay team that finished fourth. She was also a member of the 2014 state-champion 4x200-meter relay team.

Other returning athletes expected to contribute include junior Leah Klein (throws) and sophomores Mari Coltvet (sprints, jumps) and Marya Schuelke (sprints, jumps).

White Bear Lake and Forest Lake finished second and third, respectively, behind Mounds View at the Suburban East Conference championships last season and Redman expects both to be serious contenders again this spring.

Mounds View was scheduled to open the outdoor season on April 9 by hosting the Mustang Invitational but the event was cancelled because of weather.

Next up on the docket for Mounds View are the conference relays on April 12 at Roseville and an invitational meet at Totino-Grace on April 15.
