Raiders come up short in section semifinals

Following an easy first-round victory, the Roseville Area High School girls basketball team looked to continue its post-season run when Champlin Park paid a visit on March 5 for a Section 5AAAA semifinal. The Rebels had also cruised in its playoff opener to set up what was expected to be a competitive semifinal.

The game was close and in the end, the third-seeded Rebels eked out a 50-47 victory over second-seeded Roseville. Champlin Park led by 10 at halftime and survived Roseville’s second-half comeback attempt.

Both teams had seven players score and two reach double figures. Kaia Porter, as she usually does, led Roseville with a dozen points and Meleah Hansen added 11. Champlin Park got 16 points apiece from Erica Hicks and Hanna Crymble.

The loss snapped Roseville’s 10-game winning streak and gave the Raiders a final record of 21-7. The Raiders’ previous loss had come on Jan. 26 against Cretin-Derham Hall.

Porter finished the season as Roseville’s leading scorer at 14.7 points per game. Her season high was 29, which she got in a 61-50 victory over Woodbury on Feb. 9.

Champlin Park followed up its victory over Roseville by playing in the section final against top-seeded Park Center, which was the Class AAA state champion last season. The Pirates reached the section final by thumping Spring Lake Park and edging Osseo.

Park Center has a chance to win back-to-back state titles in different classes. The Pirates took care of Champlin Park 65-41 in the section final and open the state tournament on March 15 at Target Center. The pairings for the tournament were not available at press time for this edition of the Review.
