Beacons girls basketball edged in section quarterfinals

For the fourth straight year, the Concordia Academy girls basketball team saw its season come to a conclusion in the second round of the section playoffs.

The Beacons, seeded fifth in Section 4AA, opened the post-season with a runaway victory and then matched up against fourth-seeded Columbia Heights in the quarterfinals. The Hylanders built an 11-point halftime lead and held on for a 68-63 victory.

Columbia Heights’ offensive attack was a bit more balanced as eight Hylanders scored while only five players from Concordia Academy made it onto the score sheet.

Anika Neuman had a huge game for Concordia as she poured in 30 points to lead all scorers. Clara Paul chipped in 11, Ella Beardsley and Annika Hegrenes each scored nine and Madison Stilp added four.

Lala Humphries led Columbia Heights with 18 points and Biftu Tula added 13.

Concordia Academy opened the post-season on March 3 with a 56-17 thumping of St. Paul Academy. Columbia Heights topped St. Paul Humboldt by 40 points in the first round.

The loss gave Concordia Academy a final record of 11-16.

The last time Concordia Academy lasted longer than two games in the postseason was 2012 when it beat Cristo Rey Jesuit and New Life Academy before losing to Minneapolis Washburn.

Columbia Heights went on to fall in the section semifinals to top-seeded Minnehaha Academy 78-60. Minnehaha and St. Croix Lutheran, the No. 2 seed, met for the section title on March 11, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

The Class AA state tournament starts on March 16 with all four quarterfinal games being played at Mariucci Arena at the University of Minnesota.
