Dr. Matt Klein of Mendota Heights announced his bid for the state Senate District 52 seat on Monday, Jan. 11.

Klein, 48, is a doctor of internal medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center, and a member of the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan School Board.

Klein, who is seeking the DFL Party endorsement, kicked off his candidacy with a campaign gathering on Jan. 9 to rally supporters.

"I'd like to continue serving families and our community as a state senator. I will focus on seeking solutions to the complex issues facing our state including securing educational opportunity for all children, striving to rebuild the vibrancy of the middle class through livable wages, and ensuring access to health care," Klein said.

He was raised in St. Paul and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison before going to medical school at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He and his wife, Kristine, have five children.

State Sen. Jim Metzen, DFL-South St. Paul, currently holds the Senate seat for District 52.

Metzen, who is serving his ninth term, is battling lung cancer and is being treated by Mayo Clinic doctors. Late last week his legislative aide said there has been no announcement about whether Metzen will run for re-election this year.
