Irondale finishes runner-up

The Irondale High School girls basketball team hosted its own tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The Knights entered the tournament last week as the defending champion but had to settle for second place.

Irondale opened the tournament on Dec. 28 with a 51-42 victory over Duluth East while St. Francis knocked off North St. Paul 57-52. That sent Irondale and St. Francis, former rivals in the now-defunct North Suburban Conference, to the championship game.

The Knights couldn't keep up with the Saints and fell 56-52. Duluth East took third with a 58-37 win over North St. Paul.

Irondale opens the 2016 portion of its schedule on Tuesday with a trip to Spring Lake Park and it also travels to Robbinsdale Armstrong on Friday.
