Area boys hockey teams looking to overcome slow starts

The Irondale/St. Anthony Village and Mounds View boys hockey teams have been below .500 for most of their seasons thus far but both picked up needed victories late last week.

Irondale/St. Anthony Village

The Knights had a winning record after taking their season-opener against North St. Paul but then dropped their next three games. They climbed back to within a game of .500 with a 4-3 victory over Armstrong/Cooper on Dec. 12.

Irondale led 3-0 and 4-1 but still needed to fend off the Wings down the stretch. Armstrong/Cooper drew within two with a goal in the final minute of the second period and tightened the game up even more by scoring with just under 10 minutes left in the third.

The Knights stood tall against the ensuing barrage and pulled out the victory. Senior netminder David Mulligan finished with 38 saves in the victory.

Irondale tallied all but one of its goals in the first period. Jake Fuhr got things started at 3:27 off of an assist from Erik Reiff. Just 75 seconds later, Victor Mattson made it 2-0 as he scored off an assist from Jack Moore.

The Knights made it 3-0 at 12:58 when Louie Meysembourg and Fuhr assisted on Tanner LaMotte's goal.

The Wings got on the board with 3:24 left in the first but Irondale restored its three-goal lead late in the second period as LaMotte recorded his second goal of the game from Meysembourg and Robert Gabler.

Irondale's other game last week was a 4-1 loss to Champlin Park on Dec. 10.

The Knights (2-3) are in action twice this week. They visit Rogers on Dec. 15 and Totino-Grace on Dec. 19. Next week, it's a trip to Fogerty Arena in Blaine to face Spring Lake Park.

Over the holiday break, Irondale treks north ñ make that way north ñ for a tournament in Roseau. The field includes Faribault, Henry Sibley, Park Rapids, Lake of the Woods and a pair of teams from North Dakota.

Mounds View

Through the first six games of the season, the Mustangs alternated between losing two in a row and winning two in a row. Mounds View snapped a two-game losing streak on Dec. 12 so it needs to win its next game to keep the pattern going.

Mounds View goes after its second two-game winning streak on Dec. 17 when it takes on Woodbury at Bielenberg Arena. The Mustangs then host Stillwater on Dec. 19.

The Mustangs snapped out of their most-recent losing streak in a big way by dominating Forest Lake in a 6-1 victory. The six goals were Mounds View's single-game high this season and equaled the amount it scored in the previous two losses.

Mounds View peppered the Forest Lake net with 40 shots on goal, including 16 in the second period.

Colin Baird scored the only goal of the first period just 55 seconds in to give Mounds View a 1-0 lead. Wyatt Thole and Spencer Ovshak tallied goals for the Mustangs in the second period to make it 3-1 after two.

Mounds View then blew the game open in the third with goals from Joe Sutton, Nick Hronski and Vann Hartigan.

Baird added two assists for a three-point game while Hartigan and Hronski had single assists along with their goals for two-point games.

Joe Marcouiller stood tall in the Mounds View net and made 24 saves to pick up the win and post his highest single-game save percentage (.960) of the season.

Following this weekend's Stillwater game, Mounds View is off until after Christmas. The Mustangs are playing in the Silver Division of the Schwan Cup over the holiday break and open the tournament against St. Michael-Albertville at 8 p.m. on Dec 28 at the Super Rink in Blaine.
