Chuck Wiger receives 2015 Friend of Public Education Award

Association of Metropolitan School Districts recently presented state Sen. Chuck Wiger, DFL-Maplewood, with its 2015 Friend of Public Education Award on Friday, Oct. 30.

According to the association, the award is presented annually to state policymakers or citizens who “demonstrate exceptional leadership, advocacy and support of public education and issues important to metropolitan school districts.”

AMSD chair Rebecca Gagnon said, “As the chairman of the [Senate] Education Policy and E-12 Finance Committees, Senator Wiger’s ... support and leadership were instrumental in securing investments in early learning programs as well as the extended time and English learner programs; all critical to closing the achievement gap.”

In accepting the award, Wiger said, “I’m very proud of [the state Senate’s] work last year to invest in early learning programs and look forward to building on those investments next session.

He continued, “Likewise, last session was also a big year for investments in facilities.

“It is my firm belief that your ZIP code should not dictate the quality of your learning environment.”

Wiger was previously selected for the AMSD Friend of Education award in 2006 and 2014.
