Beacons volleyball passes first state test

In the state tournament for the second straight year, the Concordia Academy volleyball team did this year what it couldn't last season. The Beacons won their first-round match and put themselves in a prime position to play for the state title.

Concordia, the No. 2 seed, rolled to a three-set victory over unseeded Hermantown in the Class AA quarterfinals on Nov. 12. The Beacons didn't even allow the Hawks to reach 20 points in any of the three sets, winning the match by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-18.

The Beacons stormed to victory in the first two games with hitting percentages up near .500. Concordia put down 16 kills with only two errors (.467 hitting percentage) in game one and went for 15 and one (.483) in game two.

Junior outside hitter Erin Fallert led the way with a match-high 14 kills and only one error for a hitting percentage of .542. Fallert also led all players with 19 digs.

Junior Clara Paul added nine kills and senior Elisabeth Tramm set up most of those kills as she finished with 37 set assists.

The victory moved Concordia Academy into the semifinals, where it was set to face third-seeded Rocori on Nov. 13, after the deadline for this edition of the Review. The Spartans won a five-set match over Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta in the first round.

Concordia Academy earned some recognition at the banquet held the night before the first day of the tournament.

Class AA all-state honors went to Fallert and Tramm.

Concordia Academy head coach Kim Duis picked up the Section 5AA coach of the year award.
