South St. Paul dominates quarterfinal game, 37-14

Packers rack up 3 TDs before Fridley scores

South St. Paul 37 - Fridley 14

The South St. Paul Packers' running game was clicking in their Class 4A quarterfinal state tournament battle with the Fridley Tigers Friday, Oct. 30, at Macalester College football stadium.

Before Fridley was able to find the end zone, the scoreboard read 21-0 as South St. Paul's offense has its way with the Tigers' defensive line. The first touchdown came when South St. Paul senior running back Anthony Perez galloped 20 yards into pay dirt. Sam Rohrer kicked the point after to make it 7-0.

A short time later, South St. Paul senior quarterback Dan Pietruszewski plunged 4 yards on a keeper for a TD. Rohrer made good on the PAT for a 14-0 margin.

Before the first quarter expired Malik Holmes put the ball across the line after a 9-yard jaunt. Rohrer made the point-after kick, and it was 21-0.

Then the Tigers finished a drive with a TD and the PAT.

But before the halftime intermission, the Packers matched the Tigers TD with one of their own. South St. Paul held a comfortable lead, 28-7, heading into the second half.

In the third quarter the Packers picked up a two-point safety that was followed by a 1-yard plunge by Pietruszewski and a Rohrer PAT that pushed the count to 37-7 heading into the final 12 minutes.

As the fourth quarter approached, South St. Paul pulled its starters off the field in order to give its offensive backups some state tournament playing time. Late in the game Fridley (8-3) managed to score a second touchdown, and the 37-14 final was posted.

The Packers (10-1) met the Rocori Spartans (9-3) in the tournament's semifinal round at Maple Grove High School Friday, Nov. 6.
