The cross country teams from Irondale High School weren't able to advance to the state meet but they will be represented at state by some individual team members.

Senior Danielle Franke and junior McEwan Rodefeld turned in performances fast enough to snare one of the eight individual state berths available to boy and girl runners.

The top eight runners who aren't members of either of the top two teams receive individual state berths. Franke earned the eighth and final individual berth on the girls' side by finishing 13th overall. Her time of 19:59.4 over the 5,000-meter course was more than four seconds faster than the next eligible runner, who happened to be teammate Sarah Anderson. Anderson's time was 20:03.8 and she finished 16th overall.

Juniors Michelle Meyer, Liz Axberg and Lucia Mesfin rounded out Irondale's top five and gave the Knights a team score of 109, which put them in third place.

St. Michael-Albertville won the section team title with 51 points and Anoka was second at 71 points.

Irondale's boys team wound up in 10th place but Rodefeld made state with a 12th-place finish. His time was 16:39.9 and he was sixth out of the eight individual state qualifiers.

The rest of Irondale's section contingent included seniors Tim Axberg and Marcus Schultz, who finished 41st and 47th, respectively. Sophomore Spencer Brown and senior Joey Jankowski rounded out the Knights' top five. Freshman Tyler Eskro and senior Tim Lyngdal also competed at sections.

Centennial won the team championship with 62 points and Mounds View was the runner-up with 66 points.

The state meet is Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Class AA races take place in the morning with the girls starting at 10 a.m. and the boys at 11 a.m.

St. Anthony Village

The Huskies' cross country teams also competed in Section 5AA last week but were unable to advance anyone to state.

St. Anthony's boys team finished 13th in the team standings while the girls team wound up in 15th.

Senior Elena Forsline led the St. Anthony girls with a 51st-place finish while Nathan Dropik-Landwehr finished 59th to lead the boys team.
