Raiders, Beacons two wins from state

The volleyball teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy began this week needing two victories to secure section titles and berths in next week's state tournament. Here's a look at what each team faces as they try to get back to the state tournament.

Roseville

The Raiders are searching for a state berth for the fourth year in a row. Roseville won its playoff opener last Thursday in four games over Mounds View to earn the right to host the semifinals.

Roseville hosted those semifinals on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Review. The top-seeded Raiders faced fourth-seeded Stillwater in the second semifinal while the first semi pitted second-seeded Totino-Grace against third-seeded North St. Paul.

The section final is Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Washington High School.

Roseville did something against Mounds View that it hadn't done much this season. Entering the match, the Raiders, who had played 14 best-of-five matches, were undefeated in all of them and had lost only four sets in those matches.

Mounds View, which lost 3-0 to Roseville back on Oct. 13, dropped the first set to the Raiders but rallied to take set No. 2. That was it for the Mustangs, however, as Roseville regained control and closed out the match in four games.

Stillwater clinched its berth in the semifinals by beating Centennial in four sets. Totino-Grace and North St. Paul won their quarterfinal matches against Spring Lake Park and Mahtomedi, respectively, in three sets.

Concordia Academy

With 15 teams in Section 5AA, the top seed received a first-round bye. The Beacons are that No. 1 seed and rested during the first round last week.

Concordia Academy opened the playoffs later in the week with a three-set (25-13, 25-13, 25-20) victory over Watertown-Mayer.

That victory sent Concordia to the semifinals, which are Wednesday. The Beacons host fourth-seeded Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, which beat 13th-seeded Breck and fifth-seeded Providence Academy in three sets each to reach the semifinals.

Wednesday's match will be the second playoff contest between Concordia and Howard Lake in three weeks. The Beacons and Lakers met in the first round of the section football playoffs back on Oct. 14.

Also still alive in Section 5AA are second-seeded DeLaSalle and third-seeded Dassel-Cokato. They meet in the other semifinal on Wednesday and then the two semifinal winners play for the Section title on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Academy of Holy Angels.
