Concordia senior headed to state

Concordia Academy senior Seguy Hanson has had a solid season for the Beacons' boys cross country team and that season has been extended one additional week. Hanson gets one more race thanks to his performance last week in the section meet.

Hanson, running in the Section 4A meet on Oct. 29 at Battle Creek Regional Park in St. Paul, finished fifth overall to qualify for the state meet. He completed the 5,000-meter course in 17:00.1.

Next up for Hanson is the Class A state meet on Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The smaller schools run in the afternoon portion of the state meet so the girls start at 1 p.m. and the boys follow at 2 p.m.

Battle Creek has turned out to be a nice course for Hanson. A week earlier, he won the Tri-Metro Conference individual title at Battle Creek.

The top two teams from each section advance to state along with the top eight individuals who are not members of one of the top two teams. Six of the top seven individuals across the finish line in the Section 4A boys meet were from non-state qualifying teams.

Trinity won the boys section team championship and will be joined at state by section runner-up Minnehaha Academy. Concordia Academy finished eighth in the team standings.

Concordia Academy's No. 2 runner in the section meet was freshman Barnabas Preble, who finished 26th overall. Eighth-grader Elliott Flack was 54th, junior Timothy Peterson wound up in 58th and senior Nick McMurray took 83rd. Freshman Luke Symmank and junior Samuel Cameron also competed in the section meet.

On the girls side, Concordia Academy finished 12th in the team standings. Blake won the team title and Trinity also qualified for state by taking second.

Junior Elise Boll led the Beacons with a 37th-place performance. Also competing in the section meet for the Beacons were senior Mary Anna Preble, junior Rebecca Hed, sophomore Madeline Peck and senior Grace Dunavan.
