Beacons draw top seed in volleyball playoffs

The Concordia Academy volleyball team won the Section 4AA title to earn a berth in the state tournament last year. The Beacons won't get the chance to defend its section championship this season after being relocated to Section 5AA.

With a new section comes a new set of teams to face in the post-season. None of the teams in Section 5AA this year were in 4AA last year except for Concordia.

The Beacons begin their quest for another state berth on Thursday in the quarterfinals. With 15 teams in the section, the No. 1 seed receives a first-round bye and Concordia Academy is that top seed.

Concordia Academy enters the post-season fresh off winning the Tri-Metro Conference championship and with plenty of rest. When the Beacons take the court on Thursday, it will be their first game action in more than two weeks.

The last time Concordia Academy (22-6) played a match was on Oct. 13, when it beat St. Croix Lutheran in four sets to win the conference title outright.

The Beacons host either eighth-seeded Watertown-Mayer or ninth-seeded Fridley on Thursday. Those two squads will square off in the first round on Tuesday.

The section tournament continues on Nov. 4 with the semifinals and wraps up on Nov. 6 with the section final at 7 p.m. at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield.

The state tournament runs Nov. 12-14 at Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul.
