Mounds View soccer chasing dual state berths

It has been five years since both soccer teams at Mounds View High School made it to state in the same season. There’s a chance that they could do it again this year.

Both teams have advanced to their respective section finals and get their chances to secure those state berths on Tuesday, after deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

The girls team, seeded second in Section 4AA and ranked No. 2 in the state, hosts sixth-seeded Stillwater at 7 p.m. The boys team is seeded third in Section 5AA and plays at top-seeded and ninth-ranked Park Center, also at 7 p.m.

Mounds View's girls squad has yet to suffer a loss this season and hasn't given up a goal in its last seven matches. The Mustangs blitzed eighth-seeded Tartan in the quarterfinals 8-0 and followed that up with a 3-0 win over fifth-seeded White Bear Lake in the semifinals.

The Mustangs got goals from eight different players in the game against Tartan with Emily Boyer opening the scoring 15 minutes into the match. Olivia Elvidge, who spends most of her time on the field as the goalkeeper, got a chance to play out and scored her first varsity goal.

White Bear Lake put up more of a fight and trailed only 1-0 at halftime. Mariah Northrop scored that lone first-half marker and also added Mounds View's second goal off an assist from Boyer. Emma Bangert closed out the scoring as she converted an assist from Shania Fleming.

Stillwater is the surprise of the post-season by advancing to the section final as the sixth seed. The Ponies edged third-seeded North St. Paul 2-1 in the quarterfinals and pulled off another upset in the semifinals by beating second-seeded East Ridge 4-3 in a shootout.

During the regular season, Mounds View beat Stillwater 1-0 on Oct. 1.

The girls team is trying to get back to the state tournament for the first time since 2013.

Mounds View's boys team opened the post-season with a 4-1, home win over Osseo in the quarterfinals. That set up a semifinal road game at second-seeded Prairie Seeds Academy on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams scored single goals in the first half and then played a scoreless second half and overtime. Mounds View pulled out the victory with a 4-3 advantage in the shootout.

Awaiting Mounds View in the section final is a Park Center team that handed Mounds View its first loss of the season. After starting the season 6-0-1, the Mustangs ran into a buzzsaw on Sept. 19 as the Pirates beat Mounds View 4-1. The loss started a three-game losing streak that knocked Mounds View out of the Class AA rankings.

Mounds View was able to recover over the last two weeks of the season by going 3-0-2 in its final five games.

The boys team is trying to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2010.

Irondale, Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village

Four other teams from the Bulletin area also competed in the section soccer playoffs last week. Only one was able to pick up a victory.

The Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village boys team, seeded eighth in Section 5AA, opened the playoffs with a home match against ninth-seeded Irondale. The Panthers beat the Knights 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Park Center then ended the Panthers' season by beating them 4-0.

The Panthers girls squad drew the sixth seed in Section 5AA and went up against third-seeded and defending section champion Centennial in the quarterfinals. The Cougars won 5-1.

Irondale's girls team was the seventh seed in 5AA and traveled to second-seeded Coon Rapids in the quarterfinals. The Cardinals blanked the Knights 6-0.
