Knights blitz Orioles for payback, playoff victory

A frustrated Irondale High School football coach Ben Fuller lamented his team's performance in a loss to St. Louis Park in week six of the regular season. The Orioles entered the game, which was Irondale's homecoming, winless, but left Wendt Field with a 26-22 victory over the Knights.

The loss ended up costing them a home playoff game but they made the best of it last week. Irondale opened the Section 5AAAAA playoffs with a trip to St. Louis Park and blitzed the Orioles 33-7 for its first post-season victory since 2013.

The victory sends Irondale to the section semifinals and gives the Knights another chance at redemption against a team it lost to during the regular season. It won't be an easy task, however, as Irondale travels to top-seeded and second-ranked Spring Lake Park. The Panthers rolled to a 35-0 victory over Irondale in week four of the regular season.

In the St. Louis Park victory, Irondale took charge early and held the Orioles at bay most of the game. Telly Mutanga did most of the damage offensively by rushing for 178 yards and four touchdowns. He scored on a 13-yard run in the first quarter, runs of three and one yard in the second and another three-yarder in the third quarter.

Mutanga's touchdown barrage helped Irondale build a 27-0 lead before St. Louis Park finally got on the board midway through the third.

Irondale closed out the scoring late in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Monico Real, who had a big rushing game with 129 yards. He also completed 11 of 16 passes for 86 yards. Wyatt Smith caught three of those passes for 48 yards.
