Soccer playoffs not kind to Roseville, Concordia Academy

There is plenty of high school soccer playoff action going on this week but unfortunately for the teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy they won’t be involved. The teams from both schools faced a tough road and couldn't come up with a victory in the early rounds last week.

Roseville boys

The Raiders suffered a frustrating loss in the first round of the Section 5AA playoffs. After taking a 2-0 lead, fourth-seeded Roseville gave up three second-half goals and lost 3-2 to fifth-seeded Champlin Park.

Bill Robertson scored both of Roseville's goals in the first half. The first came fewer than five minutes into the match and came off an assist from Jonas Kazlauskas.

The second goal came 15 minutes later with the assist going to Jorge Radilla. The play started on a crossing pass from Win Thein.

With a two-goal lead, Roseville appeared to settle back into more of a defensive mode in the second half and Champlin Park took advantage. The Rebels trimmed the deficit to one on a goal by Caleb Aronson 14 minutes into the second half and tied it 12 minutes later as Aronson assisted on Mike Biah's goal.

Champlin Park then scored the game-winner with 5:39 left on the flukiest of goals. Eze Amajuoyi was pressuring a Roseville defender, who tried to clear the ball but drilled it into Amajuoyi. After ricocheting off Amajuoyi, the ball flew backward, over the hands of Roseville goalkeeper Cody Barrett and into the Raiders' goal.

With the win, Champlin Park advanced to Saturday's section semifinals, where the Rebels lost 1-0 to top-seeded Park Center.

The section final is Tuesday at Park Center, where the Pirates host third-seeded Mounds View. The Mustangs beat seventh-seeded Osseo 4-1 in the quarterfinals and second-seeded Prairie Seeds Academy 2-1 in a shootout.

Roseville girls

The Raiders were the seventh seed in Section 4AA and visited second-seeded East Ridge in the quarterfinals. East Ridge had beaten Roseville 1-0 during the regular season but the second time around wasn't nearly as close.

East Ridge needed only four minutes to get on the board en route to a 5-0 victory. The Raptors added two more goals to take a 3-0 lead at halftime and scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half to put the game away.

The win sent East Ridge to the semifinals, where it squared off with sixth-seeded Stillwater. The Ponies upset third-seeded North St. Paul in the quarterfinals and pulled off another surprise by beating East Ridge 4-3 in a shootout.

Stillwater plays at Mounds View for the section title on Tuesday evening.

Concordia Academy

Both Beacons teams were on the road for the first round of their respective section tournaments. The boys team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Croix Prep while the girls were blanked 7-0 by St. Paul Central.

Central and St. Croix Prep went on to lose in the second round. St. Paul Central lost 1-0 to Hill-Murray and St. Croix Prep dropped a 5-0 decision to Mounds Park Academy.
