Polars send Cadets marching

North High's boys soccer victory over the St. Thomas Academy Cadets, 3-0, on Thursday, Oct. 8, upped the team's record to 8-0 and gave it the Metro East Conference title.

As the Polars prepare for the section playoffs, they have an overall record of 14-2.

"It's our sixth conference championship in a row. We feel pretty good about that," stated coach Casey Holm. This is the first year that North and St. Thomas are in the Metro East Conference, but when they were in the now-defunct Classic Suburban Conference, the North boys won the last five titles.

"We took advantage of almost every chance we had. All's well that turns out well! We're very happy with the win," Holms added.

On North's first big charge into St. Thomas territory, Kenlove Solon carried the ball deep down the left side of the field. When he was challenged, he made a perfect pass to a charging Busquets Jeudi, who rifled a shot into the St. Thomas goal at 37:04, just 2:56 into the contest.

The North defense was making a huge difference; thwarting St. Thomas every time it marched into the enemy territory.

North had another great scoring chance when Brian Solis sent an upfield pass to sophomore forward captain Ataniel Claremond. He deked his way past a defender and sizzled a laser shot into the back twines at 21:59 into play.

By the time the teams broke for intermission, North netkeeper Malachy Zamacona had turned aside all six shots the Cadets fired at him.

Just 12:36 into the second half, Claremond scored the final goal. He worked his was around several defenders before blistering a shot into the St. Thomas goal.

After the loss, St. Thomas coach Julius Tangwe said, "We held the advantage as far as possession was concerned, but we just could not take advantage of our chances.

"My fear was that the boys would let down. My fears were fulfilled. But it is what it is. Sometimes you control the game and don't win. That's the way it is."

Final shots on goal saw the Cadets with an 11-8 advantage.

The Section 4AA boys soccer playoffs are underway and will continue Oct. 15 and Oct. 20, when a section champion will emerge with a berth in the state tournament.
