Larger schools await Beacons

Through the first five weeks of the football season, Concordia Academy has faced off against teams from schools of similar size. That scenario changes starting this week.

On Friday, the Beacons embark on the final three weeks of the regular season and in all three of those games they play teams from Class AAAA. Through the first five weeks, Concordia, a Class AA squad, played only teams from Class AA and Class AAA.

The gauntlet of Class AAAA teams begins with Columbia Heights paying a visit as Concordia Academy celebrates homecoming. Friday's game is also the Beacons' final home game of the regular season.

In addition to trying to snag a homecoming victory, Concordia Academy goes into Friday's game looking to snap a losing streak. Since winning their first two games of the season, the Beacons have lost three in a row.

The latest setback was a 19-7 defeat at the hands of St. Paul Como Park on Saturday afternoon. Concordia managed to score only seven points for the second time in three weeks.

Como Park opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter but the Beacons responded with a nine-yard, second-quarter touchdown run by Cooper Wood to tie the score at 7-7.

The Cougars did all of the scoring in the second half with a pair of short touchdown passes.

Concordia Academy managed only 203 yards of offense and all of it came on the ground. Wood finished with 126 yards on 19 carries for a respectable 6.6 yards per rush.

Columbia Heights enters Friday's tilt with the same overall record (2-3) as Concordia Academy and has lost its last two games. The Hylanders fell 27-24 last week to Minneapolis Henry, which handed Concordia its only real drubbing (48-7) of the season in week four.

Breck is the only other team that both Concordia Academy and Columbia Heights have played so far this season. Concordia beat Breck 27-21 in week two while Columbia Heights lost to Breck 45-35 in week four.
