RAHS soccer banking on improved offense

Putting the ball in the net was a challenge for the Roseville Area High School boys soccer team a year ago. Only once did the Raiders score more than two goals in a game in 2014 but that has already changed this fall.

Roseville lost 13 players from last year's team but head coach Agapitos Papagapitos feels this year’s squad has the ability to light up the scoreboard.

"They are technically very good and can move the ball," said Papagapitos. "We have a couple of guys who can really finish, which we haven't had the last couple of years."

Senior forward Bill Robertson is one of those players and he showed that by scoring a pair of goals in the Raiders' 4-0 victory over Eastview on Sept. 1. He also tallied a goal in Rosevilleís 3-1 win over Centennial on Aug. 29.

Papagapitos also likes the playmaking ability of junior Jonathan Vu.

"He's a guy who attracts attention and then he pushes through and finds openings," Papagapitos said.

Defensively, Roseville features three seniors — Henry Schaefer, Hsinku Lay and Peter Keel — who are all captains.

"They are all three-year starters," said Papagapitos. "They know what to do."

Part of their job is to protect sophomore goalkeeper Cody Barrett. Through three games, Roseville's opponents have scored three goals.

Papagapitos is pleased with the 3-0 start but knows that there is still plenty of soccer to play against some pretty good teams.

Take this week, for example. Roseville should really get a feel for what it's made of when third-ranked Wayzata visits on Tuesday and seventh-ranked Woodbury comes in on Thursday.

"The schedule gets tough," said Papagapitos. "These are good tests but we have a lot off very tough games to play."
