Healthy Mounds View ready to roll

After going unbeaten and untied in the regular season and advancing to the state tournament in 2013, the Mounds View High School girls soccer team began last season with high expectations. The 2014 season didn’t go according to plan, in large part, because of injuries but with everyone healthy this fall the Mustangs are again looking strong.

"We should be really strong this fall," said third-year Mounds View head coach Terri Patraw. "We're talented, we're deep and, knock on wood, we’re healthy."

Last year's team lost its three top players thanks to a pair of knee injuries and an Achilles injury yet still went 12-4-3 and advanced to the section final.

Fast forward to this year and Mounds View looks like a team with a chance to repeat what the 2013 team accomplished: A perfect regular season (15-0) and a trip to state.

Leading the way are six defenders with starting capability. Julia Anderson, a senior captain, is one of them.

"We're very strong and very deep across the back," said Patraw.

Senior Rachel Boyer was one of the players lost to injury last season but she is back and healthy this fall. She scored 25 goals as a sophomore.

Also returning is senior captain Mariah Northrop, who recorded 16 assists last season and should become the program's all-time assist leader by the end of the season.

Mounds View should also benefit offensively from the return of senior Emily Boyer and sophomore Shania Fleming. Boyer missed all of her junior year and most of sophomore season due to knee injuries and Fleming was one of Mounds View’s top scorers a year ago.

Mounds View's most inexperienced position is goalkeeper. Senior Olivia Elvidge saw some limited varsity minutes as a backup in 2014.

Mounds View kicks off the season on Thursday with a 7 p.m. home game against Champlin Park. The Mustangs have a number of non-conference games against teams in Section 5AA, which is where Mounds View was until the Minnesota State High School League reclassified.

The Mustangs were moved to Section 4AA, where they’ll deal with mostly fellow Suburban East Conference teams along with North St. Paul and Tartan. East Ridge and Woodbury could be formidable opponents in both the conference and section. Cretin-Derham Hall is not in Section 4AA but Mounds View will still tangle with the Raiders during the regular season.
