Beacons win, Raiders fall in week one

Week one of the high school football season is in the books even though the state fair hasn't started yet. With the adjusted schedule for prep football this season, games started a couple weeks earlier than normal.

Concordia Academy, under a new head coach, triumphed in its season opener against Spectrum while Roseville Area High School fell to Burnsville.

The Raiders traveled south to Burnsville for a game that started three hours earlier than originally scheduled due to the threat of severe thunderstorms. The time change did help get the game in but there was still a 30-minute weather delay in the fourth quarter.

None of that helped Roseville, however, as it fell 28-0 to the Blaze. Burnsville struck for the opening points in the first quarter and took a 13-0 lead at halftime. Burnsville put the game away with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns.

Roseville had trouble getting its offense on track and gained 205 yards. Senior quarterback Henry Bensen completed five of 16 passes for 37 yards. Anthony Weber caught two of those completions.

Devin Dykes led the ground game with 97 yards on 15 carries.

Roseville goes after win No. 1 with a week-two home game against Stillwater on Friday. The Ponies are also looking for their first victory after falling 30-13 to Eagan in week one.

Concordia Academy

The Beacons ventured to Elk River for a week-one contest against Spectrum and came away with a 21-14 victory. Trailing by seven at halftime, Concordia Academy scored a pair of second-half touchdowns while keeping the Sting off the scoreboard.

Concordia struck first on a 59-yard touchdown run by Soren Mundfrom but Spectrum answered with a pair of second-quarter scores.

The Beacons tied it up on a 10-yard touchdown run by Adam Maser in the third quarter and scored the game-winning points on a 25-yard run by Cooper Wood.

With win No. 1 secure, Concordia hosts Breck in its home opener on Friday. Severe weather postponed Breck's week-one game against Providence Academy until Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.
