Area amateur teams aiming for state

Three area men's amateur baseball teams began the week with state-tournament aspirations. Diamond Cutters, Tri-City Shark and the St. Anthony Hogs all play in the Skyline League and are trying to reach the Class A state tournament.

Diamond Cutters, who play their home games at Bethel University, were co-champions of the Skyline League and received a bye in the first round of the league playoffs. Diamond Cutters will play either White Bear Township or the Stillwater Loggers in a best-of-three series this weekend.

Tri-City Shark took fifth in the league standings and opened the post-season last weekend with a best-of-three series against the St. Paul Mudhens. The Shark swept the series with wins of 8-2 on Friday and 13-2 on Saturday.

Tri-City has another best-of-three series this weekend and the winner advances to state. The Shark play either Red Rooster, which was co-champion of the Skyline League with Diamond Cutters, or Stockmen's Irish, which finished tied for third in the league.

The St. Anthony Hogs tied for third in the Skyline and played a first-round series against White Bear Township last weekend. The Hogs won game one on Saturday 14-2 but couldn’t come up with enough key hits in losing 2-1 on Sunday. St. Anthony stranded 14 runners in the loss.

The Hogs and White Bear Township played the deciding game of the series on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin. If St. Anthony advances, it plays Stockmen's Irish in a best-of-three series this weekend for the right to go to state. Stockmen's beat the Hogs twice during the regular season.

The Class A state tournament is played at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington over two weekends in early August. The first two rounds are scheduled for August 6-9 with the rest of the tournament taking place August 14-16.
