Rosetown goes 1-2 in sub-state playoffs

As the seventh seed in the Sub-State 7 playoffs, the Rosetown Rockets American Legion baseball team faced an uphill climb in its quest to reach the state tournament. Rosetown lasted until the third round before being eliminated.

Rosetown opened the post-season on July 21 against second-seeded Fridley Gold Eagle, a team made up mostly of players from Totino-Grace High School. Fridley beat Rosetown 6-3 to send the Rockets to the losers’ bracket.

Fridley followed up its win over the Rockets with losses to North St. Paul and Oakdale in consecutive games.

Rosetown was able to stave off elimination once by thumping sixth-seeded Hamline Red 8-1 in the second round on July 22. The victory eliminated Hamline Red, which beat Rosetown 2-1 and 8-4 during the regular season. Hamline Red lost 7-1 to North St. Paul in the first round.

With the victory, Rosetown advanced to the third round and a game against fourth-seeded West St. Paul, which beat Mahtomedi 2-1 in the first round and lost 4-2 to Hamline Purple in the second round.

West St. Paul got the best of Rosetown 9-2 to end the Rockets’ season.

West St. Paul went on to lose to Hamline Purple, the No. 1 seed. Third-seeded North St. Paul wound up winning the sub-state championship and will represent the Fourth District in this week’s state tournament, which is being played in Chanhassen and surrounding communities.

Joining North St. Paul in the state tournament from the Fourth District is Tri-City Red, which clinched its berth by winning the Sub-State 8 championship.

Both North St. Paul and Tri-City Red play their first two state-tournament games Friday at Braemar Field in Edina.
