39ers hold on for 2-1 win over St. Paul Aggies

With Elvin Baez on the mound, the North St. Paul Post 39 American Legion 39ers managed to stop their non-district foes — the St. Paul Aggies — in a baseball game at Kuenkel Field July 14.

Baez went the first six innings and gave up five hits, while walking one and striking out four. Jake Rubbelke came on to close out the Aggies in the seventh as the 39ers eked out a 2-1 victory that pushed their overall mark to 20-15.

"We got good pitching out of Baez and played well in the field," stated interim North St. Paul manager Johnny Economy. "We had some nice defensive plays, especially the catch by [Adam] Hildebrandt in center field. We could have used a few more hits and runs but got the hits when they counted. Then our defense made those two runs hold up."

The Aggies gained an early lead after they loaded the bases on three hits in the first inning. A strikeout on a wild pitch and a throw to first for the out allowed Joe Harrington to score.

In the bottom of the first the 39ers gained the run back when designated hitter Sam Blees worked a one-out walk. Hildebrandt creamed a one-hop double off the center field fence that plated Blees.

In the last of the second Joey Lenart worked a leadoff walk. He moved to second on an infield out and went to third on a single off the bat of Louie Varland.

With runners at the corners the pair worked a perfect double steal with Lenart sliding safely under the tag with what turned out to be the game-winning run.

The line score read St. Paul Aggies 1-6-1-6, and the 39ers 2-6-0-6.
