Legion baseball playoffs approaching

For the second straight weekend, the Rosetown American Legion baseball team played in a large, multi-team tournament. Getting victories in those tournaments has proven to be a tough task for the Rockets.

Rosetown, playing in the Bloomington pool of the 96-team Gopher Classic, won one of its five pool-play games and did not advance to the playoff portion of the tournament.

The Rockets picked up their victory on Saturday by beating Chaska 2-1. That came right after Rosetown lost 8-3 to Omaha Millard West. Rosetown also fell 8-1 to Mankato National on Friday and 11-0 to Yankton and 6-5 to Bloomington Gold on Sunday.

Omaha Millard West, a semifinalist in last year’s tournament, won the pool with a 4-1 record and advanced to the playoff portion of the tournament. Omaha and Mankato both finished with 4-1 pool records but Omaha won the tie-breaker by virtue of its 8-5 win over Mankato on Saturday.

The Gopher Classic playoffs took place on Monday and Tuesday, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

A weekend earlier, Rosetown traveled to New Ulm and played in the Upper Midwest Classic. The Rockets went 1-3 with the lone victory coming against LeSueur-Henderson.

With the bulk of the season completed, Rosetown has one more week to prepare for the sub-state playoffs, which take place next week.

Rosetown entered this week in sixth place in the Fourth District standings. The final two games of the regular season for the Rockets are Wednesday and Thursday.

Rosetown plays under the lights on Wednesday against Hamline Purple at 8 p.m. at CHS Field. Purple began the week a half-game out of first place in the district standings.

On Thursday, Rosetown is in St. Paul again, this time at St. Paul Academy High School to face Hamline Red. The Rockets are looking to split the season series with Red, which edged Rosetown 2-1 on June 8. Thomas Anderson held Hamline scoreless for six innings before running into trouble in the top of the seventh. Rosetown got its only run in the game on Rajeev Upadhyaya’s single, which drove in Brian Flackey in the first inning.

Last week, Rosetown went 0-3 in district play with losses to the North St. Paul 39ers (4-0), North St. Paul Cavalry (3-2) and Tri-City Red (7-0).

Once the regular season is complete, the coaches in Sub-State 7 will seed the teams, they’ll be placed in a bracket and the playoffs will commence on July 20.
