Holiday tournaments on tap for Tri-City Red and Maroon

The upcoming Independence Day weekend is for many a time to relax but for the Tri-City Red and Maroon American Legion baseball teams it will be business as usual for the holiday.

Both teams are participating in tournaments over the weekend.

Tri-City Maroon

Maroon is headed to Rochester for the Firecracker 92 tournament, a 16-team, three-day event. The 16 teams are divided into four pools and the four pool winners advance to the semifinals on Sunday.

Of the 16 teams, 10 are from Minnesota, three are from Wisconsin, two come from Canada and one is from Nebraska.

Tri-City Maroon is in a pool with the Rochester Redhawks, a team from Omaha and a team from Winnipeg. Maroon opens the tournament against the Redhawks on Friday at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Tri-City plays Omaha at noon and Winnipeg at 2:30 p.m.

Sunday's schedule is determined by what place each team finishes in their respective pools.

Prior to heading to Rochester, Maroon has four Fourth District games on the schedule. Two of them were scheduled for Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin. Maroon also hosts Hamline Purple on Tuesday and takes on Hamline Red on Thursday at CHS Field.

Through June 28, Maroon was 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Fourth District play. Last week, Tri-City had three district games rained out and squeezed in one non-district game against Stillwater on June 23.

Stillwater won that game 2-1 to snap Maroon's four-game winning streak. During the streak, Tri-City beat Rosetown, Forest Lake, Fridley and South St. Paul.

Next week, Maroon plays a pair of district games and then hosts a pool in the Gopher Classic.

Tri-City Red

Red is also traveling south this weekend but more to the southwest. Tri-City is playing in the Upper Midwest Classic in New Ulm.

The tournament features 16 teams separated into four pools of four teams each. Each team plays its other three pool-mates to determine which teams advance to the playoff portion of the tournament. The top two teams in each pool advance while the bottom two teams play consolation games on Saturday and then are done for the weekend.

Tri-City Red is in a pool with Eastview, Hutchinson and Renner, South Dakota. Red opens the tournament Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Eastview and then takes on Renner at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, Tri-City faces Hutchinson at noon and then waits to find out the rest of the schedule for the tournament.

Of the 16 teams in the tournament, 12 are from Minnesota, three are from South Dakota and one is from Nebraska. Each pool features three Minnesota teams and one non-Minnesota team.

In addition to the tournament, Red plays four Fourth District games this week. One was on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin. Two more are Tuesday at CHS Field and the fourth is Wednesday at CHS.

Next week, Tri-City Red plays a district game on July 8 and then heads to Bethel University for the Gopher Classic.

Tri-City Blue

Unlike its Tri-City counterparts, Tri-City Blue is taking the holiday weekend off. Blue has two games on the schedule this week.

Tri-City plays at Fridley on Tuesday and hosts Anoka on Wednesday. Both games are 6:15 starts.
