Neither of the squads that won team titles at last week’s Tri-Metro Conference track and field championships were seriously challenged in their pursuit of those crowns. St. Croix Lutheran’s boys team and Visitation won their titles by an average of 55 points.

Since the race for the team title wasn’t much of one, the rest of the teams in the meet, including Concordia Academy, were focused more on winning individual event championships. The Beacons came up with four.

In the boys’ competition, Concordia Academy senior Brandon Larsen claimed a gold medal in the shot put with a top heave of 49 feet, two inches. That was nine inches better than the runner-up’s top distance.

Junior Clara Paul and senior Chloe Deutsch added three wins to the girls’ title total. Paul won the long jump by more than a foot with a top leap of 16 feet, seven inches, and the triple jump by nearly three feet with a distance of 35 feet and one-half inch.

Later in the week, Paul, competing in a meet at St. Francis, broke her school record in the triple jump by going 37 feet, three inches.

Deutsch added title No. 4 for Concordia Academy by winning the pole vault. Her top height of nine feet even was a full foot better than the runner-up height.

With the conference meet wrapped up, Concordia Academy has more than a week to prepare for the Section 4A state qualifier, which is May 28 and 30 at Macalester.

Roseville

The Raiders’ track and field teams had last week off from competition and spent their time preparing for this week’s Suburban East Conference championships. Both teams are looking to improve on last year’s performances.

In 2014, the Roseville girls finished fifth and the boys were sixth. Each team also posted one event win a year ago.

Mounds View is the defending team champion for both genders.

This year’s meet is Tuesday and Thursday at East Ridge High School.
