There have been plenty of on-field sports news coming out of Mounds View High School this spring, but last week there were headlines made by some Mustangs off the field. Five Mounds View seniors signed letters of intent to attend a college and play a sport at their future school.
Here's a look at where each athlete is headed this fall.

Matt Baker
Baker, the 2014 Class AA 110-meter hurdle state champion, is headed to the University of Minnesota to join the men's track and field team.
He is the second Mounds View senior to sign with the Golden Gophers. Veronica Rasmussen, a thrower for the Mustangs' girls track and field team, is also headed to Minnesota this fall.
Minnesota is a Division I school and a member of the prestigious Big Ten Conference.

Ryan Kaczynski
Kaczynski is also headed to a school in the University of Minnesota system. He will play basketball at Minnesota-Duluth.
He led the Mustangs and the Suburban East Conference in scoring this season with 23.1 points per game. He was selected to play in the Minnesota High School All-Star Basketball Series at the end of March.
UMD is a Division II school and plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Cassidy Smestad
Smestad received interest from Division I and II schools and ultimately picked Truman State University, a Division II school which is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Truman State is located in Kirksville, Missouri.
Smestad is a part of the Mounds View girls track and field team’s outstanding throwing crew. She qualified for the state meet in both her sophomore and junior seasons in the shot put. She finished ninth in her first state appearance and moved up to fifth last season.
Smestad plans on studying in Truman State's sports and exercise science program.

Hunter Sorensen
Another member of the Mounds View boys basketball team, Sorensen is headed northwest to the University of Jamestown in North Dakota.
Jamestown is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school and a member of the North Star Athletic Association. Other schools in the conference are Dakota State (South Dakota), Dickinson State (North Dakota), Mayville State (North Dakota), Presentation (South Dakota), Valley City State (North Dakota) and Waldorf (Iowa).
Former Mustang Justin Harding was on the Jamestown roster for the 2009-2010 season. Another former Mustang, DJ Carroll, played at Valley City State a few seasons ago.

Jacky Volkert
Volkert, who led Mounds View's girls basketball in scoring this season, signed with Minnesota State-Moorhead's women’s basketball squad. Among her accomplishments as a Mustang was reaching the 1,000-point plateau this season.
MSU-Moorhead is a Division II school and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
