North hoping for ‘added depth’ in golf

North boys golf coach Jim Pearson is looking forward to the 2015 boys golf season.

He recently stated, "We are young and eager to improve over last year's record (when the Polars finished in eighth place in the conference).

"We are showing signs of improving with some added depth. This may well give us a chance to 'sneak up' on some of the other teams. We are hoping for a few more wins.

Pearson then looked a bit more closely at his team and said, "We have some new players who have never played competition golf. They have been on a golf course only 'recreationally.'

"The pressure of not only playing tough golf courses, but against an opponent, will add to the stress of the newer players.

While not naming captains, he pointed to "some of the players who should be playing the majority of the varsity matches." They are: senior Cole Anderson; juniors Carter Mogren,

Mike Picker, Jake Empting and Greg Larsen; sophomores Michael Ettlinger and Dale Coggin; and freshman Logan Xiong, who could be a varsity starter.

Some of the new golfers who hope to post numbers that will help them move into the lineup will be juniors Timmy Drake, Dawson Duchesneau, Peter Eplund and Thomas Knutson, along with sophomore Noah Collins.

Pearson added, "The willingness of each player to work on their own game, on their own time, will determine how well we do in all of our matches, both varsity and JV. It would be ideal if we could have a number seven and eight player pushing the last two scorers on the varsity. That would go a long way to make us a better team. Having that happen would be an ideal situation for us."

Assisting Pearson is Nate Peasley.

The Polars will play Thursday, April 16 at 2:45 p.m. against Henry Sibley and Hastings at Southview Country Club, and will participate in the Tartan Invitational at Tartan Park Golf Course Monday, April 20 at 11:30 a.m.; and will return to Tartan Park Thursday, April 22 at 3:15 p.m., to play Simley and Tartan.
