Maple Grove homicide suspect shot by police after car chase on I-694

The suspect in a Maple Grove homicide was shot and killed by police following an early-morning car chase on Interstate 694 that ended when the suspect crashed into a wire barrier near Rice Street and exited his vehicle with a weapon on Wednesday, Dec. 17, police said.

Maple Grove Police responded to a 1 a.m. call on Wednesday of a reported killing at a rest stop on Interstate 94 near Weaver Lake Road and found a man dead of an apparent homicide, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

Police at a press conference said a suspect in the homicide was seen entering a red SUV with Oregon license plates, which was later seen near the 94-694 split. Police pursued the vehicle, attempting to stop it, until it crashed into the center median on 694 near Rice Street.

The male driver exited the SUV holding a weapon and was shot and killed by police, police said. No one else was in the SUV and police would not say what type of weapon the man had.

A Hennepin County Sheriff's deputy and a Brooklyn Center Police officer shot their guns at the scene.

"These are situations we take very seriously and our goal is to always resolve public safety situations peacefully," Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said at the press conference.

Maple Grove Police are investigating the rest stop homicide and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, at the request of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Brooklyn Center Police, is investigating the highway police shooting, according to the release.

As the BCA processed the scene, both eastbound and westbound lanes of 694 were closed to morning commuter traffic following the shooting between Interstates 35W and 35E, snarling traffic in the area.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, both lanes of traffic were back open around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner will release the names of those killed in the incidents following autopsies.

The investigation is ongoing and Maple Grove Police request that anyone with information regarding the rest stop homicide call them at 763-494-6100.
