Mounds View soccer gunning for dual state appearances

Tuesday is a big night for the soccer teams at Mounds View High School. State-tournament appearances are on the line for both the boys and girls squads.

Mounds View's boys team won a pair of home playoff games last week to advance to the section final while the girls squad got there by winning once at home and once on the road.

For the boys, the road to state runs through top-seeded and second-ranked Maple Grove. The Crimson, which pitched a pair of shutouts in wins over Irondale and Park Center last week, is unbeaten and untied (18-0) thus far and is averaging less than a half-goal against per game.

Mounds View's defense is also formidable, surrendering just under a goal per match. The second-seeded and seventh-ranked Mustangs blanked Champlin Park 3-0 in the quarterfinals and Osseo 1-0 in the semis.

Against Champlin Park, Mounds View got goals from Jacob Dingman, Michael DeGroot and George Mata. Matt Baker scored the only goal of the match against Osseo.

Things won't be any easier for the Mounds View girls, who must get past top-seeded and fourth-ranked Centennial on its home pitch. The Cougars whipped Osseo 8-1 in the first round and Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village 6-0 in the semifinals.

Centennial (15-1-2) has lost just once this season and has two ties on its record. One of those standoffs was a scoreless affair against Mounds View on Sept. 20.

The Mustangs (12-3-3), who began the season ranked No. 2 in the state, blanked Roseville 4-0 in the quarterfinals and upset second-seeded and sixth-ranked Maple Grove 1-0 in the semifinals.

Emily Nash led the offense against Roseville with a goal and an assist. Also tallying goals for Mounds View were Clare Schooley, Jordan Nustad and Shania Fleming while additional assists went to Mariah Northrop, Rachel Schoneman and Julia Anderson.

Anderson scored the only goal of the Maple Grove game when she put one past Crimson goalkeeper Marissa Hamilton less than three minutes into the second half. Northrop provided the assist.

Mounds View goal keeper Carlye Wright made two saves in each playoff game last week and hasn't given up a goal in the last five games.

This is the first time since 2010 that both Mounds View soccer teams have reached the section final in the same year. That year, the girls team beat Centennial in a shootout to reach the state tournament while the boys won 1-0 at Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village.

The girls went on to finish in a tie for third place in the state tournament while the boys lost in the quarterfinals.
