Mustangs in thick of boys soccer conference race

The Suburban East Conference boys title chase in boys soccer has turned into a three-horse race and one of those contenders is Mounds View. The Mustangs entered this week as one of three teams with unblemished conference records.

Mounds View improved to a perfect 4-0 in Suburban East Conference play with victories over Park-Cottage Grove and Stillwater last week. The Mustangs also beat Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village on Saturday to extend their overall winning streak to nine games.

Following the opening weekend in which it lost 4-0 to Wayzata and tied Osseo 1-1, Mounds View has given up just two goals in the nine games since, scoring more than two goals per game.

With as well as the Mustangs are playing, they might be considered the dark horse among the three conference title contenders. The two teams Mounds View must get past to claim the title have combined overall records of 21-0 and are highly ranked in the state coaches poll.

East Ridge (11-0) was No. 2 in last week's Class AA rankings and Woodbury (10-0) was fourth. East Ridge has actually given up more goals overall than Mounds View, but it is scoring more than four goals per game and has scored five or more goals in a game four times this season.

Woodbury is very stingy defensively, but not as offensively explosive as East Ridge. Woodbury has surrendered only five goals.

East Ridge, Mounds View and Woodbury have yet to play each other this season, but that will change this week. Mounds View visits East Ridge on Thursday.

Next week, Woodbury plays at East Ridge on Sept. 30 and hosts Mounds View on Oct. 2.
