Boys soccer: Polars rout Pioneers

Nick Gilbert records hat trick

North 6 - Hill-Murray 0

Behind the three-goal scoring attack of captain Nick Gilbert - he also added an assist for a four-point game - the North High Polars routed rival Hill-Murray.

“It was a good game for us,” understated North coach Casey Holms. “We were able to control the tempo of the game. I thought our starters did a nice job for us, and then our subs came in and held them off.

“We have done very well against opponents, especially on this, our home field. We are off to a good start; hopefully it will continue.”

“They scored the goals,” stated first-year Hill-Murray coach Joe Voeller after the game. “Defensively we didn’t help ourselves. We were lazy a lot of times.

“They were a very direct team. Sadly, we didn’t realize it, and that was tough for us to deal with.

Voeller continued, “Athletically, they were very fast, and they were very direct. We had a tough time dealing with it. It was hard.”

The game began with both sides playing pretty much in the center of the field, and gave no inkling of what was to come.

The first goal came at 23:07 into the contest when Tyler King made a nice cross pass to the center of the Hill-Murray goalmouth. On hand to receive the ball was Brian Solis who quickly sent a blast into the net for what turned out to be the game-winner.

Once the first tally was on the board, the North offense basically took over. A good charge up the field by the Polars saw King feed Gilbert who moved the ball up the left sidelines. He deked his way around a defender at the penalty box area and drove a hard shot inside the left corner at 24:12.

Just under 10 minutes later it became 3-0 when a solid, crisp feed from Tyvan Vang finished a good charge when Gilbert one-timed the ball into the back mesh at 32:49 of the first half.

The Polars had outshot the Pioneers by 7-2 at the halfway mark, and North continued to control the flow of play in the second half.

With the ball, Gilbert made a good deke around a defender and sent the ball across to Irvin Barrera-Gonzalez, who wasted no time sending a blast to the upper reaches of the Hill-Murray goal. The score pushed the count to 4-0 at 10:24.

Next a long up-field feed from King found Gilbert. The senior defender moved in on net and sent a blast under the crossbar for his hat-trick goal, and North led 5-0 at 15:01.

The final score came after some crisp ball movement saw Luke Kubiatowicz move down the right sideline, cut to the goal and from a sharp angle send a bullet that found the mark at 26:01 to put the final 6-0 on the scoreboard.
